Dr.
Robert Slobody at Meadowlands Veterinary Center here in Willoughby,
Ohio has pioneered a new laparoscopic ovariectomy (spay)
procedure that diminishes pain and recovery time for female dogs by
up to 65 percent compared to the traditional method. Laparoscopic
ovariectomy is
minimally invasive and safer
because the entire procedure is performed through a dime-sized
incision, and, while he views the organs via a state-of-the-art
camera system, the ovaries are removed by cauterizing the
blood vessels and ligaments. The procedure
eliminates tearing of the ligaments,
potential tearing of the body wall and possible hemorrhage by the
main arteries to the ovaries.
Many
procedures using these techniques are currently available and the
list will continue to grow as new skills are developed. Some of
these available procedures here at Meadowlands include;
Ovariectomy (Spay),
Retained abdominal testicles, Liver Biopsy, Liver tumor removal,
Kidney biopsy, Stomach Tacking (bloat prevention), Cancer staging,
Intestinal feeding tube placement, Pericardial window, Lung tumors
and bullas, Bladder stone removal, Bladder polyps and tumors,
Intestinal biopsy, Pancreatic evaluation and biopsy.
The
recognized benefits of minimally invasive surgery for all types of
human surgical procedures are now available for our animal friends.
Laparoscopic techniques allow for less surgical trauma, more precise
procedures performed under magnification, reduced discomfort
associated with incisional healing and therefore decreased need for
postoperative medications, along with excellent cosmetic outcome.
This makes it the preferred choice of surgeons and a viable
alternative for your pets. Clients frequently rationalize,
“I want the same advanced
medical/surgical treatment for my four-legged family member as I
want for myself.”
The
benefits are well documented but the advanced training and high cost
of specialized equipment have suppressed its use in modern
Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Robert Slobody here at Meadowlands
Veterinary Center in Willoughby, Ohio has received the advanced
training and has procured the specialized equipment to make these
procedures possible and available to your pets.
“We are proud to be one of
the few practices in the United States able to offer this service to
the community.”
